Traditional Challah Recipe
Ask any Jewish person, what’s one of their favourite foods and I guarantee challah will be one of their answers!
I’ve loved challah for as long as I can remember. It definitely isn’t your standard loaf of bread ๐ this plaited loaf is an absolute delight! Soft and with a slight sweetness, it makes the perfect bread. Traditionally eaten during Friday night dinners, being dipped in chicken soup, I actually made this one in preparation last night when I made my babka (check out the super yum babka recipe too!) as I used the same dough for both.
Now in all honesty, I don’t always have the time to make my own challah but when I do, I definitely tear it up warm and have a little snack on it! No butter or topping needed! If you would like a little bite of challah heaven, give this recipe a try ๐
Recipe:
1 cup warm water
1tsp yeast
2 tbsp honey
3.5 cups strong bread flour
1tsp salt
1/4 cup oil
1 egg to glaze
Sesame seeds to decorate
Method:
1) Mix together the warm water, yeast and honey in a small bowl or jug.
2) In a mixing bowl, add the flour, salt and oil. Gradually pour in the yeasty water and mix well to form a soft dough.
3) Knead the dough for 20 minutes and then place in the bowl, cover and allow to prove for 1 hour 30 mins.
4) Divide the in half. Each half, divide into three balls and rolls into long strands. Pinch the stands at the top and plait.
5) Transfer to a line baking tray and glaze with egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for approx 20-25 mins at 180c
